Georgie: My Adventures with George Rose

Off Broadway at the Davenport Theatre

Ed Dixon is storyteller extraordinaire in this playful and sometimes dark bioplay.

Dixon details his friendship with George Rose over a period of 10+ years.   Admittedly, I knew little about Rose, but felt like I had spent 85 minutes getting to know him in his living room.   Dixon was 30 years younger than the gay British thespian who was brutally murdered in 1988 at the age of 68.  But this was not before appearing in over 20 theatrical productions and winning 2 Tony awards and a host of other honors. Ed introduces us to Rose as the most brilliant and talented man he ever met.  Dixon cleverly moves in an out of character to mimic Rose in full accent telling us of his encounters with this larger than life and sometimes enigmatic man.

It’s clear that Dixon considered Rose a mentor and a friend, and the love he still feels for him comes through in this moving performance.

While Roses’ story does not have a happy ending, Dixon has left behind some beautiful moments in time and memorialized a man and his love of life, the theatre and his craft.  Georgie is sadly making its final performance today at 3pm, but follow the website http://www.georgietheplay.com/index.php  to see if it might be coming to a town near you.
