Kontakthof by Pina Bausch

Dance at BAM Howard Gilman Opera House

While I love dance, I don’t get to see as much as I would like.  With everything that is On and Off-Broadways it’s hard to see everything, but I did get the chance this weekend to head out to Brooklyn to see Kontakthof, and I would not have missed this for anything.

First let me tell you if you do not already know,  Pina Bausch’s dance interpretations were highly controversial in the early 70’s when she was given the direction of Wuppertal’s theatres in Germany, but it was not long before she received international recognition for the true genius choreographer she was.   This piece in particular was sexy and hypnotic with 11 Men, 12 women and 24 chairs in constant liquid movement. Another point of interest is that the dancers often speak, sing or make other random sounds.  It’s so unusual, fascinating and beautiful.   I don’t think we will see anything like the creations of Pina Bausch again.

I’m sure this type of dance - theatre is not for everyone, and at almost 3 hours, I did notice a couple of people did not return after intermission (but really a couple as in 2).   This beautiful theatre was packed full with people who know and love Pina Bausch, and none of us were moving.

If you want to take a walk on the wild side there are still a few more chances to see this visual feast through November 2nd only.  Tickets are available HERE.   I would also encourage you see 2011 documentary simply called Pina available on Netflix.  -ThisbroadSway 10/26/2014
