Mothers and Sons

On Broadway-at The Golden Theatre

Mothers and Sons on Broadway -It's not easy going from musical one night to a show like this the next, (It’s easier doing the opposite-note to self). I'm still digesting it somewhat. It's actually quite interesting seeing a couple of generations of gay history played out on stage.

Terrence McNally is a brilliant playwright. He brings us back to a time when AIDS was devastating the gay community all the way up to present day...gay, married with children. Avant garde theatre? Perhaps not, but you will be thinking about this long after it’s over. It was very monotone, no dramatic outbursts, but the message is felt deeply just the same.

Tyne Daly is a world class actress that will deliver her line then with just a look out over the audience the hairs on the back of your neck will stand up. She is tortured in this play at the loss of her son and is looking for closure. So unexpectedly, and univited she shows up at the door of her sons ex-lover, who is now married to another man and raising a young son, Bud. Let me mention that Bud, played by Grayson Taylor is a little firecracker! The story develops from there, and it’s a good one! Thisbroadsway says bring your Kleenex and get to the Golden. Tony maybe? -thisbroadSway 3/21/14
