The Lion

Off-Broadway at the Lynn Redgrave Theatre

When is a lion not a lion?   When that lion is  Benjamin Scheuer singing his heart out at the Lynn Redgrave Theatre telling us the musical story of his life, as written, strummed and sung by himself.

This is a not uncommon story.  Ben grew up in England, lost his father at an early age, moved to the States when he was 18, and has been living his dream to play “folk songs like his dad”.   Along the way he had some courageous battles of his own, and you will soon understand that his strength, courage and heart are the lion inside of him and it will warm you to the core and this is what brings common to extraordinary.

If you know anything about me then you know that one of my favorite things about theatre is that it doesn’t have to be big and fancy.  Sometimes a simple set with one player and 7 guitars is all you need to create magic on the stage and so is the case here.  Note that Ben plays all but 1 guitar from acoustic to electric in a spirited rock and roll/folky style.

People braved the bitter cold night on this Friday the 13th to see Ben do his thing. One very special person was in attendance.  Actor extraordinaire Bruce Willis showed up not only to see the show, but he stood at the door and tore tickets!   This was only the beginning of the magic that was to fill this night.

This show played last year at the Manhattan Theatre Club to rave reviews.  They managed to get back the original full cast (That would be Ben and the guitars).  I desperately tried to get into that show the week before it closed to no avail.  The buzz had caught on and even my friend who knew the producer could not help.  Don’t get sold out on this one.  Come and see Ben Scheuer roar.  Check out discount links from my ‘Shows’ page, and see more about The Lion at http://thelionmusical.com/#home playing through March 29th only.
