Cabaret at Don't Tell Mama
Remember the happiness you felt inside when you were a kid on a snowy night and you just knew that school was going to be called off the next day? Well that’s the kind of happy feeling I had last night at Karen Mason’s Christmas, Christmas, Christmas show at Don’t Tell Mama. This show will blanket you in warm cozy comfort.
Karen was looking lovely as ever in glittering gold against a lovely red background, and a beautiful wreath as a finishing touch. This set the mood as Karen took the stage singing a sexy Santa Claus Is Coming To Town that was followed by a medley of What the World Needs Now/We Need A Little Christmas/It’s Today.
The show, Karen explains, is all about “tradition”, and she sure knows a lot about that. After all she opened this very club with Nancy LaMott back in 1983, and has be gracing us with her elegant tones ever since. So “tradition” continued with holiday favorites like The Christmas Waltz, The Christmas Song, It’ll be Christmas Before You Know It and another medley of Winter Wonderland/Let It Snow. There was a nice selection of classics and some funny tunes mixed in to lighten the air. One of the highlights for me was A House Is Not A Home. While not a Christmas tune, it’s one of my all-time favorites, and Karen delivers it with such deep emotion that you will be challenged not to shed a tear. A gentle version of Joy To The World is sung by consummate musical director Christopher Denny and that’s only the half of it. There are more medleys of Christmas classics from quiet to bold, and a Christmas wish is complete with the encore song Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. There is no mistaking that a seasoned director is behind it all, and that would be the one and only Barry Kleinbort who brings out the best in all of his performers.
