Marilyn Maye

Cabaret at Birdland Jazz

I went to bed last night singing Luck be a Lady, and I woke up this morning singing the same tune.
Marilyn started to sing that song last night, paused and said, this is a guy’s song, but “I can do whatever I want”!  And we agree Marilyn.  Do whatever you want because we love it all.

Marilyn Maye is one of the greatest cabaret singers of our time.   Her trademark is the theme medleys of songs that she delivers in a smooth and jazzy style.   A stand out last night was a medley of Autumn in New York/When October Goes.  I could just feel myself melting into my chair listening to her effortlessly serenade the packed house.

Marilyn sang straight through for an hour and 15 minutes. She is so intimate with her audience it almost feels that she is singing just for you alone.   Maybe the reason she is so impressive is because she has had a lot of practice.  It really is impossible to believe this sexy singing, leg kicking, finger snapping icon is 86 years old.

After the show, Marilyn did a quick change into a smart looking jacket, slacks and leopard slippers and graciously greeted a very long line of fans, present company included,  in the back room.   I was beyond impressed at how genuinely lovely she was with everyone. She is style and grace, sugar, and spice and everything nice.

In case you missed Marilyn at Birdland, she will be appearing at Helsinki Hudson on September 21st at 7pm.    Visit their website for tickets at http://www.helsinkihudson.com/schedule.html#140921
