Phantom of the Opera

On Broadway at The Majestic Theatre

I don’t care what you did tonight, it wasn’t as good as this. Unless, that is, you were at the Majestic Theatre watching Norm Lewis take the role of the Phantom for the first time, and Sierra Boggess returning to the stage in the role of Christine. I have not been to the Majestic Theatre in over, (lets just say) 30 years, when I
saw my first Broadway Musical, The Wiz. What memories came to mind looking around this glorious theatre. The Phantom of the Opera is no newcomer to Broadway. It’s been running for over 25 years now, but it’s as fresh and new as any show I’ve seen this season. The fact that Norm Lewis and Sierra Boggess took the stage tonight in the lead roles just made it better. The Phantom role might just as well have been made for Norm Lewis. He’s got that smooth easy tone to his voice, and you are carried away. I just love him. I could not help
but well up at the end of the first act to “All I Ask of You”, hearing the pain in the Phantom’s voice.

In the second act, Sierra Boggess brings it home. She is a superstar. I cannot imagine  doing what she does two nights in a row, never mind the six times a week she will be doing this performance. It’s mind boggling, and makes my throat hurt a little. Let me in no way take away from the rest of the cast who are all delightfully wonderful, but this night was for Norm and Sierra.

This is BIG Broadway at it’s best. This show tugged at my heartstrings as well as my tear ducts. ThisbroadSway says come and see life unfold at the Opera. I promise you will not be disappointed.

I could not determine the length of time Norm & Sarah will be performing these roles but it will be through June 16th, at least. Please catch them if you can. Even if you’ve already seen Phantom 20 times. It’s not to be missed. -thisbroadSway 5/12/14
