This One’s For The Girls

Off-Broadway at St. Luke’s Theatre

Dorothy Marcic takes us on a historical journey in song and dance, and gives big shout out to all women in this high energy ‘let’s here it for the girls' new musical.

It’s amazing how far women have come.  In this musical revue, women evolve from the shadows into the spotlight and it’s all cleverly told with a colorful list of classic song arrangements (Phil Hinton) that touch on women’s roles that changed history and shaped the world.  Touching on major moments like woman’s suffrage, fight for equal pay, World War II factory workers, roles in cinema,  and women's liberation, we are reminded of the struggles and victories.

Stage veteran Jana Robbins plays Janet who  leads this lyrical cast of women: Samantha (Haley Swindal), Eden (Traci Bair) and Rosa (Aneesa Folds).  These lovely ladies take on various personas of notable women figures in a series of vignettes depicting brief periods of history. Songs like ‘I Fall To Pieces’,  ‘Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend’, ‘You Don’t Own Me’, ‘My Man’, ‘I Want To Be Loved by You’, ‘God Bless The Child’, 'Over There' and, of course, 'I Am Woman' are  just a small sampling of the musical selections you’ll  be hard pressed not to sing along to,  which by the way, is encouraged.  I tried but when someone in front of me turned around and gave me a look, I took it on advisement to leave it to the professionals, like Haley Swindal, whose powerful and unforgettable voice has been heard before both On and Off-Broadway. Both Haley and the soulful songstress Aneesa Folds are double-booked appearing in Sistas,  also written by Marcic and playing now at St. Lukes. Traci Bair is a perfect complement to this talented group of wonder women, and it doesn’t stop there.     The set (Josh Iacovelli) is enhanced by a rear projection screen that helps move you through time as does the lively choreography by Tamara Kangas Erickson who  also directs this little gem.

It’s clear that women have fought hard to gain their strong position in the world today.  After all, none of us would be here without them.   Get ‘Over There’ and show your support today.  For tickets and more information visit http://thisonesforthegirlsthemusical.com and check my website for available discounts here.   -ThisbroadSway 10/21/2017
